A hidden treasure

One of the most singular features of the Castle of San Marcos is a treasure that remained hidden and forgotten for eight centuries: the mihrab of the old mosque.

During the reign of Alfonso X, the present Castle was built over a former mosque which belonged to al-Qanatir, the Muslim town dating from the 10th century taken by the King in the Reconquest.

During the construction of the fortress-church a wall was raised just in front of the wall of the quibla and the mihrab, concealing them for 800 years.

Now this treasure, hidden for so many years, can be admired in the visit to the Castle, making this National Monument a place that brings together the Roman, Muslim and Christian cultures.
